I was walking my new dog around 9pm one evening and saw a group of three middle aged men who appeared to be construction workers standing on the street corner smiling at me. Since my puppy generates a lot of smiles and comments about how cute he is I figured that’s why they were smiling and I smiled back. As I walked right past them they all got quiet and one of the men looked me in the eye and said “You’re OK- nothing to write home about” as if this was the conclusion to a conversation they had been having. I was really surprised and continued walking without saying anything. It felt like a slap in the face. Especially with the recent rapes in Harvard Yard it feels very important to stand up to street harassment. The next time I am the target of street harassment and it feels safe to do so, you better believe I will hollaback!
