Happy (belated) Pride!

Hollaback! Boston had a chance to march in Boston Pride this year, and though Saturday started off dreary, the weather turned sunny and perfect just as the parade kicked off at noon.

Sir Speedy Boston printed up our very first professional banner, and we were thrilled with the outcome – every picture we’ve seen popped. We carried the Hollaback! pink, white and black through the group with beads, leis, ribbon sticks, shoelaces and glitter pencils.

(Next year: temporary tattoos to hand out for sure!)

We didn’t expect much heckling, so when a man approached Stop Street Harassment’s Natasha while she was carrying the banner, it took everyone in the group a long moment to realize that yes, she really was being harassed while marching against street harassment. He, naturally, felt she really should learn to take a compliment.

We were thrilled to have Kana of Hollaback! Fredericksburgh take time out of her visit to Boston to join us on the route – thanks, Kana!

We actively denounce the notion that street harassment is culturally accepted and that victims somehow "deserve" it. Through raising awareness and sharing experiences, we hope to put an end to catcalling, groping, stalking, public masturbation, assaults, racial slurs, and other forms of street harassment. Because we believe we have the power to create a world where we can feel hot, confident, and badass, while still feeling safe!
